A forklift operator license is obtained through the UDT (Office of Technical Inspection, Urząd Dozoru Technicznego); the course ends with an exam before a UDT board. The certificate is valid for 10 years (scope without a boom) or 5 years (with a boom) and is honored by every employer in Poland.

What determines the price of a forklift course

The price of the course itself is set by the training center: it rises with the scope of the license (boom licenses cost more than non-boom ones), the number of practice hours, and courses taught in a foreign language, so it pays to compare several offers before signing up.

How long the course takes and how long a forklift license stays valid

Commercial training centers run the course, which usually takes a few days: the theoretical part covers the truck's construction, inspection regulations and safety rules, while the practical part covers driving and maneuvering loads. After the course comes an exam before a UDT board, and once passed, a qualification certificate with a set validity period.

License scopeValidity period
Lift trucks without a boom, not lifting the operator with the load10 years
Lift trucks with a boom5 years

It pays to note the expiry date right after the exam: once it passes, operating the truck is formally not allowed, regardless of skill level.

Can you work on a lift truck without a UDT license

No, not for lift trucks. Since 1 January 2024, in-house individual permits for operating them have lost validity: the possibility of issuing them was already abolished on 9 August 2018, and permits issued earlier (up to 31 December 2004) remained valid at the latest until 31 December 2023. Today the only document authorizing independent operation of a lift truck is the UDT qualification certificate.

Funding for the forklift course

Funding for the course depends on the offer and position, so it's worth asking directly during the job interview.

Licenses obtained abroad

A certificate issued in another country does not work automatically in Poland; technical inspection is regulated at the national level. For licenses from an EU member state, the UDT runs a qualification recognition procedure under the act of 22 December 2015 on the rules for recognizing professional qualifications acquired in EU member states (ustawa o zasadach uznawania kwalifikacji zawodowych): you must submit translated documents confirming completion of the course and passing the exam abroad. The recognition act covers EU member states. For licenses obtained outside the EU, including in Ukraine, the UDT sets the path individually. Before signing up for a course, it's worth asking the UDT whether the documents can be processed through recognition or whether a Polish exam is required. This is the same logic that governs recognition of other professions; it's described in the article on nostrification and recognition of qualifications.

What comes after the forklift license

UDT licenses cover more than one type of equipment: overhead cranes, mobile platforms, specialist trucks. Each additional document widens the group of positions you can apply for, especially in warehouses and logistics centers. The full industry context is covered in the article on warehouse and logistics work; a similar link between extra licenses and available positions also applies to construction work for foreigners. Current job offers for people with UDT licenses can be found among job offers.

Frequently asked questions

What does the UDT exam look like and what happens if you fail?

The exam consists of a theoretical and a practical part and takes place before a UDT board after the course ends. A failing result doesn't close the path to a license: the exam can be retaken.

How do you renew a UDT license after the validity period expires?

The certificate has a validity period: 10 or 5 years, depending on the scope. Check the renewal procedure directly with the UDT before the deadline: the office sets the conditions and required documents.

Is a UDT license valid for every employer?

Yes. The UDT qualification certificate is issued to a named individual and is honored throughout Poland regardless of employer: changing companies does not require renewing it. A separate matter is a specific company's consent to operate a given type of truck on its equipment.

How long does it take the UDT to recognize a foreign license?

The UDT does not give a single fixed deadline: processing depends on how complete the translated documents are. That's why it pays to submit the full set right away: confirmation of course completion and passing the exam abroad.
