Production work usually means repetitive tasks at a line, on a shift system, standing up. Experience is rarely required: before your first shift you go through mandatory health and safety (BHP) training. Disappointments mostly come from questions not asked before signing the contract, meaning about the rate, the schedule and the commute.

What a shift on the production floor looks like

A shift starts with changing into work clothing and a short briefing. The team leader (brygadzista) assigns a station for the day and gives the production plan. In the first weeks the station may be different from the day before, because the plant is checking where you work most reliably.

Typical tasks:

  • operating a machine or press,
  • assembling components,
  • packing and labeling,
  • quality control,
  • feeding material to the line.

The line sets the pace, not the worker. That is the main difference from a warehouse, where output for the whole shift usually matters more. Breaks are scheduled and often shared across the whole section, because the line stops for everyone at once.

Shift system and night work

Most plants run two or three shifts. The schedule may be:

Schedule typeHow it worksWhat to watch for
Fixedsame hours for the whole periodeasier to plan the commute and home life
Rotatingworking hours change every weekyou need to reset your sleep each week

Under the Labor Code (Kodeks pracy), night hours are 8 hours between 9 PM and 7 AM, with the exact hours set by the plant's work regulations. Under an employment contract (umowa o pracę), every hour worked at night carries a premium of 20% of the hourly rate resulting from the minimum wage. Under a civil contract (umowa zlecenia), the premium depends on the contract, but most often it is not granted. How to convert a contract rate into the amount you actually receive is covered in our article on net and gross pay.

Do you need experience for production work

Usually not. The plant cares less about industry tenure than about whether you:

  • show up on time, because the line starts at a fixed hour,
  • are present, because one missing person slows down the whole section,
  • follow BHP rules,
  • report faults to the team leader instead of working around them.

The Labor Code prohibits allowing a person to work without knowing BHP rules. Initial training (general and job-specific induction) takes place during working hours and at the employer's cost. Job-specific induction for a manual worker's position lasts depending on needs, most often about 6 hours. The plant may extend it, for example for machine operation. Under a civil contract, the plant also ensures safe conditions for people working on its premises, and the scope of BHP training is set by the plant or the contracting party.

Physical conditions: noise, temperature, clothing

You mostly work standing and repeat the same movements. Some plants are cold (for example food processing), others are hot (for example plastics processing).

Noise has statutory thresholds:

  • from 80 dB the employer must assess the risk and inform workers of the hazard,
  • from 85 dB (referenced to an 8-hour working day) the employer must provide hearing protection and require it to be worn.

Personal protective equipment required at the station is worn for the whole shift. Personal clothing is not used for direct machine operation. More on this in our article on work clothing and protective equipment.

When working through an agency, the plant where you work is responsible for safe conditions at the station, while the agency is your employer. Details are covered in our article on what rights a temporary worker has.

What to ask before accepting a production job offer

  1. Whether the rate is hourly or monthly, and whether the amount stated is gross.
  2. What type of contract: employment contract or civil contract, since it determines the night and overtime premium.
  3. What schedule: fixed or rotating, how many shifts and when night shifts start.
  4. How far the plant is and how to get there.
  5. Whether accommodation is offered with this posting and on what terms.
  6. What initial medical checks and work clothing are involved. For our postings, initial medical checks are paid by us or by the plant.

Current openings are listed in the jobs for workers section. If the description does not answer one of these questions, ask before your first day, not after.

Frequently asked questions

Is production work physically demanding?

It mainly involves standing for the whole shift and repetitive movements, less often lifting. If the station involves moving heavy items, ask about their weight before signing the contract.

When do you have to wear hearing protection on production?

From 85 dB (referenced to an 8-hour working day), the employer must provide hearing protection and require it to be worn. You wear it for the whole shift then.

Can I start on night shifts right away?

Yes, if that is how the schedule is set. Under an employment contract, a worker on nights doing physically demanding work may not work more than 8 hours in a 24-hour period. Under a civil contract, the number of hours follows from the contract.

This text describes the general rules. What you are entitled to depends on your type of contract: an employment contract (umowa o pracę) or a contract of mandate (umowa zlecenie). Your own contract and payslip are what count.
