Commute to work in Silesian metropolis: time and cost
How to check the Metrobilet variant, the return after a night shift and the commute to an industrial zone before accepting an offer.
Published:
You can assess the commute to work in the Silesian metropolis before accepting an offer in three steps: pick the Metrobilet (public transport pass) variant for your route (from 119 to 249 PLN monthly in 2026), check the connection at the start of the shift and the return after a night shift, and if the plant is in an industrial zone, ask about company transport.
How much does Metrobilet cost in 2026
A new ZTM (transport authority) tariff has applied since 1 August 2026. The 30-day Metrobilet has four variants, and the price depends on the coverage zone, not on the number of trips.
| Variant | Coverage | Regular price |
|---|---|---|
| Miasto 30 (one city) | one city | 119 PLN |
| 2 Miasta 30 (two cities) | two neighboring cities | 149 PLN |
| Obszarowy 30 (area) | area defined in the ZTM tariff | 189 PLN |
| Sieć 30 (network) | entire ZTM network | 249 PLN |
The reduced ticket costs half of the regular rate. Metrobilet covers ZTM buses, trams and trolleybuses as well as Koleje Śląskie and Polregio trains within the borders of the GZM Metropolis, plus the section from Tarnowskie Góry to Siewierz. Confirm the coverage of a specific variant in the tariff on the ZTM website before buying.
Is a single-city ticket enough for work in a neighboring city
No. Miasto 30 at 119 PLN works only in one city, so a trip to a plant outside city limits needs a more expensive variant or a separate ticket. If you live in one city and work in a neighboring one, choose 2 Miasta 30 at 149 PLN. When the route crosses several cities, only Obszarowy 30 or Sieć 30 remain.
When comparing two offers, add the ticket price difference. An offer in the city you live in saves 30 PLN monthly compared to work in a neighboring city, and 130 PLN compared to a full-network ticket. How living in one city and working in another affects the choice of offer is covered in the overview of the Silesian labor market.
Commute to work in the Silesian metropolis: three questions before an offer
- Is there a connection that arrives before the first shift starts? Ask us which part of town the plant is in, then check the journey planner for a connection to that area at the shift start time, not just the city name.
- How will you get back after a night shift? Check the timetable for a connection at the night shift's end time before signing the contract.
- How long does the trip take during the morning rush hour? Check the connection on a working day and at the actual time you will be traveling.
How to recognize a ZTM night line
Night lines carry the day line's number with the letter "N" added, for example 7N or 911N. A night line usually runs the same or a similar route as the day line with the same number.
Not every day line has a night counterpart. If you commute to the plant on a line with no "N" version in the timetable, plan the return after the third shift differently: by transferring to another night line, by car, or by company transport.
Industrial zones outside the ZTM network
Many plants and logistics centers stand along exit roads and motorway junctions, where public transport runs rarely or does not reach at all. The city name in a job ad does not tell you where the plant actually is, because an industrial zone can be far from the center and from stops.
- Ask the coordinator which part of town the plant from the offer is in.
- Ask how far the plant is from the nearest stop or station.
- Compare the timetable with the hours of all shifts, not only the first one.
- Ask whether company transport is available for this offer and at what hours it runs.
For some offers in such locations, company transport is available, so ask about it and about the schedule before signing the contract. How this kind of transport works is described in the text on employee transport to the plant.
Train or car on a longer route
On longer routes between cities, rail is usually the most predictable option during rush hour, because it does not sit in traffic jams. It works well when the plant is within walking distance of the station and your Metrobilet variant covers trains on that route.
A private car opens up offers unavailable by public transport, especially for the third shift. Calculate its monthly cost (fuel, insurance, parking) and compare it with the Metrobilet price and with the difference in pay rate. Also add up the time: two hours a day commuting is ten hours a week over a five-day work week.
Frequently asked questions
Does Metrobilet cover Koleje Śląskie and Polregio trains?
Yes, within the borders of the GZM Metropolis and on the section from Tarnowskie Góry to Siewierz, within the coverage of the chosen variant.
Which Metrobilet should you choose for a daily commute to work?
One that covers both ends of the route. For work in the city you live in, Miasto 30 at 119 PLN is enough; for two neighboring cities, 2 Miasta 30 at 149 PLN; for longer routes, Obszarowy 30 or Sieć 30.
How do you get to a plant that no ZTM line reaches?
What is left is company transport, a car, or walking from the nearest stop or station. Ask about transport before signing the contract, because it is not available for every offer.
Does the employment agency organize company transport in Silesia?
For some offers, yes, usually where the plant lies outside the transport network. Ask about the commute to a specific plant before signing the contract, and find current listings in the job offers for employees section.
This text describes the general rules. What you are entitled to depends on your type of contract: an employment contract (umowa o pracę) or a contract of mandate (umowa zlecenie). Your own contract and payslip are what count.
