Furniture Manufacturing Jobs: Conditions, Dust and Safety
Physical load, wood dust and respiratory protection: the real criteria for choosing a furniture plant, not just the industry name.
Updated:
Furniture manufacturing jobs mean physical contact with wood, dust and lacquers, and plants mainly differ in the type of positions and the safeguards used, such as dust extraction and sound insulation. The real criteria for choosing a position are noise, lifting and respiratory protection, not just the industry name.
Furniture manufacturing jobs: what positions exist
Furniture production splits into several clearly different areas:
- board and wood processing: cutting, drilling, edge banding; machine work, with wood dust,
- lacquering and finishing: contact with lacquers and solvents, requires respiratory protection,
- assembly: putting components together, manual work, the widest entry point for people without experience,
- packing and warehouse: the lightest entry, close to the conditions described in the text on production work.
Differences between positions are bigger than differences between plants; it is worth asking about the specific position, not about the industry as a whole.
Noise, dust and lifting: three constant loads
Machine noise and wood dust occur at almost every production position, plus lifting oversized elements and standing work through the whole shift. For manual lifting, occupational safety rules set a maximum load weight, different for regular and occasional work. The limits come from the regulations, not from a plant's internal rules.
None of these loads is a problem if the plant uses dust extraction, sound insulation and personal protective equipment. Their scope is described in the text on work clothing and protective equipment.
If you want to know what protective equipment applies at a given position, ask us about the specific offer.
Wood dust: why it is not just a comfort issue
Wood dust, especially hardwood dust, is classified among carcinogenic factors. For the inhalable fraction, the maximum allowable concentration (NDS) is 2 mg/m³, in force since 18 January 2023. The employer must measure dust concentration regularly: at least once every 3 months when the last result exceeded half of the NDS, and at least once every 6 months when it was in the 0.1-0.5 NDS range.
The plant is also required to keep a register of employees exposed to this factor and store it for 40 years. Under an employment contract (umowa o pracę), people who worked in contact with wood dust are entitled to free periodic medical exams even after finishing that job. The exams are carried out on the request of the interested person, and the starting point is an exposure certificate issued on departure. Under a contract of mandate (umowa zlecenie), this entitlement depends on the contract.
Do you need to know Polish and have experience
Experience is usually not required for assembly and packing, more often for operating CNC machines and for lacquering, where a mistake costs destroyed material. Polish is needed at a basic level: enough to understand safety instructions and markings at the workstation; the referral for medical exams should explicitly list the factors a given person will be exposed to.
Shift work and employment stability
Furniture manufacturing works to the rhythm of export orders, so it can be sensitive to the economic situation in Western Europe. Ask about the shift system (whether there is a night shift and weekends) for a specific offer; in furniture manufacturing it varies depending on the plant's workload. On the other hand, training an employee on a machine costs the plant time and money, so turnover is lower at machine positions than at simple assembly.
Career path: from assembly to CNC
Pay rises fastest when moving from assembly to operating numerically controlled machines. Training is usually conducted internally, at the plant, and does not require external qualifications or a course outside the company; this sets the path apart from, for example, forklift qualifications. You will find current listings in our job offers, and we confirm the terms of a specific offer before the contract is signed.
Frequently asked questions
Is wood dust harmful to health?
Yes, wood dust, especially hardwood, is classified among carcinogenic factors. For the inhalable fraction the limit is 2 mg/m³, and the employer must measure and document it periodically.
What medical exams are needed for wood processing or in the lacquering shop?
The scope of exams depends on the factors at the position, so the employer's referral should list them explicitly. Under an employment contract, people exposed to wood dust additionally have the right to free periodic exams even after finishing that job. Under a contract of mandate, it depends on the contract.
What are the typical health hazards of working with wood and lacquers?
The main hazards are wood dust (a carcinogenic factor), machine noise and lacquer and solvent fumes in the lacquering shop, which require respiratory protection. The extent of exposure depends on the position, so the referral for exams should explicitly list the factors present at that workplace.
Does working with CNC machines require prior experience?
For simple machines, training usually happens inside the plant, without an external course. For an independent CNC position, employers more often look for people with experience, because an operator's mistake costs destroyed material, just as in the lacquering shop.
After leaving a job with exposure to wood dust, are medical exams still available?
Yes, under an employment contract. Under a contract of mandate, it depends on the contract. The plant keeps a register of employees exposed to wood dust and stores it for 40 years; it is on this basis, even after years, that exposure is confirmed and the right to free periodic exams is established.
This text describes the general rules. What you are entitled to depends on your type of contract: an employment contract (umowa o pracę) or a contract of mandate (umowa zlecenie). Your own contract and payslip are what count.
