Packing and packaging work pays at least the statutory minimum, i.e. the minimum hourly rate on a contract of mandate or the minimum wage for full-time work on an employment contract, with no experience or language required. The way up leads through certifications, quality control, or a shift-leader role.

What packing and packaging work involves

The tasks come down to repetitive actions: assembling packaging, placing the product inside, labeling, visual inspection, stacking on a pallet. The pace is set by the production line or a daily unit quota. Training on the position usually takes a single shift.

The physical load differs from the production role described in the article on production work: there, machine operation is involved, while packing relies mainly on hands and eyes.

What your earnings in packing in Poland depend on

The rate depends on the contract type. Under a contract of mandate, the minimum gross hourly rate applies. This is the statutory floor, not the ceiling an employer may offer. Under an employment contract, the gross monthly minimum wage applies for full-time work; for part-time work the amount is proportional to the hours worked. The current amounts of both thresholds are given in the article on the minimum hourly rate linked above.

What the employer expects from day one

  • attendance and punctuality: the number one criterion, deciding whether the contract gets extended,
  • manual dexterity in repetitive movement,
  • resistance to monotony, hard to assess before the first week.

Knowledge of Polish is usually not required, but basic safety commands are useful from day one, for your own safety, not for your supervisor.

How to move from packing to a better-paid position

The rate for packing is usually the lowest in the plant, so moving on makes sense after the first few months. There are three realistic paths:

  1. Certifications: a forklift operator course is the cheapest way to raise your rate at this stage; the cost and duration of the course are described in the article on forklift operator certification.
  2. Quality control: a position requiring attention rather than strength.
  3. Foreman or shift leader: requires knowledge of Polish, but recruitment usually happens inside the plant, not through a job ad.

How much you're allowed to lift and the physical load

For manual lifting and carrying by one person, the maximum permissible mass is: for women, 12 kg for constant work and 20 kg for occasional work; for men, 30 kg for constant work and 50 kg for occasional work. The limits are set by the regulation on occupational health and safety in manual transport work.

A single package usually doesn't come close to these limits, but working in one position and the same motion for a whole shift strains the wrists, shoulders, and spine more than the product's weight suggests. Rotation between positions during a shift reduces this risk. Ask about it at the job interview.

What to check in a job offer

We give the payment method in the job offer description. Under a contract of mandate, the minimum rate described above applies to every hour worked, regardless of pace.

Frequently asked questions

Are medical exams required for packing work?

Yes, initial occupational medicine exams are carried out before starting work, and with our offers you do not pay for pre-employment exams. The date and scope of the exam are set by the referral from the employer.

Do you need to know Polish to work in packing?

Usually not, this is one of the few positions where you can be hired without knowledge of the language. We give the requirements in the job offer description. Basic safety commands are useful from day one, but they are not a condition of employment.

How much are you allowed to lift in packing work?

Regulations allow up to 12 kg for constant work and 20 kg for occasional work for women, and 30 kg for constant work and 50 kg for occasional work for men, for manual lifting by one person.

Is packing shift work?

Yes, usually in a 2-3 shift system, including night work. Under an employment contract, night work carries an allowance under the Labour Code, and Sundays and holidays entitle you to a day off or an allowance; under a contract of mandate, such an allowance must follow from the contract's wording.

How does packing differ from production work?

In packing, hands and eyes matter most, not machine operation: this is a different physical load than in a production role, where working with equipment is involved.

This text describes the general rules. What you are entitled to depends on your type of contract: an employment contract (umowa o pracę) or a contract of mandate (umowa zlecenie). Your own contract and payslip are what count.
