Work in food processing means a low temperature on the production floor, mandatory sanitary-epidemiological checks and strict hygiene discipline, three conditions that decide whether someone stays in this industry longer than a week.

What is the temperature on the floor and is it lawful?

General occupational health and safety (BHP) rules require at least 14°C in workrooms, unless technological requirements make that impossible. An exception covers rooms where the technology requires a lower temperature, for example parts of halls in meat and fish plants, and there a lower value does not breach the regulations. At other stations (changing rooms, packing room, quality control) the 14°C threshold applies normally. Thermal protective clothing must be worn for the whole shift, and the rules for issuing it for a specific offer are given in the offer description. Working a full shift in the cold is nonetheless noticeable regardless of the equipment provided, and is often the first reason for resigning within the first week.

What checks are needed before the first shift?

Contact with unpackaged food (production, portioning, packing on the line) requires checks for sanitary-epidemiological purposes, commonly known as the sanitary booklet (książeczka sanepidowa). The obligation follows from the act on preventing and combating infections and infectious diseases in humans and applies to everyone who has such contact, regardless of citizenship. The certificate is issued by a doctor based on an examination and laboratory results, and under an employment contract the employer refers you to it as part of initial occupational checks. With our offers you do not pay for the initial checks, as they are paid for by us or by the plant. The certificate has no single statutory validity period: the date of the next check is set by the doctor in the certificate itself, and the plant tracks it the same way as periodic checks.

What does hygiene and entry to the floor look like?

The discipline here is higher than in other physical jobs, because the procedures result from food safety regulations, not the plant's own decision. Before entering the floor, the following apply:

  • a hygienic airlock with hand washing and disinfection,
  • changing into work clothing on the plant premises,
  • a ban on jewellery and watches,
  • a hairnet or cap covering the hair.

The procedures are repeated at every entry to the floor, not only at the start of the shift.

What is the pace of work like on the production line?

Work runs at a rhythm set by the machine, and stations often require holding a single body position for extended periods. Rotation between stations during a shift reduces this strain, and about work organization and the floor temperature for a specific offer, ask our coordinator.

Is this seasonal work or year-round work?

It depends on the raw material the plant works with.

Plant typeWork rhythmContract length
Meat, dairysteady all yearusually longer contracts
Fruit and vegetableclear seasonal peakshorter contracts for the harvest period

During seasonal peaks, overtime appears, but so do shorter contracts covering only the season. Under a contract of mandate (umowa zlecenie), an overtime allowance is usually not due unless the contract provides for it.

Do you need to know Polish to work in food processing?

Conversational level is usually not a requirement of the position, because line instructions are largely shown, not explained verbally. The exception is hygiene instructions: these must be understood, because admission to work with food depends on them, so this is a real requirement, not a formal one.

What is the career path in this industry?

The start usually looks similar to work in packing and packaging: a line position with no prior experience needed. From there it leads through operating packing machines, quality control and team-leader positions. Knowledge of quality procedures is transferable between employers across the whole industry. Anyone who tolerates low temperature poorly can consider warehouse and logistics work, where the cold store applies to only part of the positions.

Current job offers in processing are listed in the section for workers, and we will go through the conditions on the floor with the specific offer.

Frequently asked questions

What does thermal clothing look like for work in a cold store?

Thermal protective clothing and protective measures matched to the conditions at the station are part of the station's equipment and must be worn for the whole shift. The rules for issuing it for a specific offer are given in its description.

Do the sanitary-epidemiological checks also apply to foreigners?

Yes. The obligation applies to everyone who has contact with unpackaged food, regardless of citizenship. Under an employment contract, the employer refers you to them as part of the initial checks, and with our offers you do not pay for the initial checks.

How much do you earn in food processing as a foreigner?

The floor is set by the minimum rates: the minimum hourly rate on a contract of mandate and the minimum wage on an employment contract. Above that, the rate depends on the plant, the position and the region, and you will learn the exact amount with the specific offer.

What does onboarding for a new employee on the floor with no prior experience look like?

Food plants are used to multinational teams and have developed onboarding procedures; most line positions are trained on site, and hygiene and station handling are shown step by step under the supervision of an experienced employee during the first shifts.

This text describes the general rules. What you are entitled to depends on your type of contract: an employment contract (umowa o pracę) or a contract of mandate (umowa zlecenie). Your own contract and payslip are what count.
