Jobs in Katowice for foreigners: industries and paperwork
Which industries hire foreigners in Silesia, where to find offers and what formalities apply in Katowice.
Updated:
In Silesia, foreigners are hired mainly in manufacturing, logistics and metalworking, and plants sit close to each other across several neighboring towns. An employment agency in Katowice helps find an offer across the whole metropolitan area, since commuting to work in a neighboring town is an everyday matter here.
How the Katowice job market differs from the rest of the country
The unemployment rate in Katowice is markedly lower than in the Silesian voivodeship (województwo śląskie) and nationwide. This is one of the lowest results among large Polish cities.
For an employer, this means competing for the same candidate within a radius of a dozen or so kilometers. That is why recruiting abroad is the rule here, not a last resort.
The Katowice Special Economic Zone (Katowicka Specjalna Strefa Ekonomiczna) reinforces this effect. Investors launch lines according to their investment schedule, so demand for workers rises in jumps, and hiring rounds are frequent and regular. For a candidate this means more choice, for an employer it means building legalization procedures into the start date.
Industries that hire foreigners in Silesia
| Industry | Typical positions | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Manufacturing and automotive | machine operator, assembly, quality control | most positions, shift work |
| Warehousing and logistics | warehouse worker, order picking, forklift operator | shift system, bonuses depend on the plant |
| Metalworking | welder, locksmith, CNC operator | confirmed qualifications required |
Metalworking positions are usually better paid than general manufacturing, but the plant checks qualifications before the start date. The difference between the amount on the contract and the transfer is explained in the article on net and gross pay.
Where in Silesia most offers are
Most listings concern Katowice, Gliwice, Tychy, Sosnowiec, Dąbrowa Górnicza and Bielsko-Biała, as well as smaller towns near industrial zones, such as Czeladź, Mysłowice and Bieruń. Living in one town and working in a neighboring one is standard in the metropolitan area. Employment profiles in individual towns are described in separate articles, for example on working in Gliwice and on commuting within the Silesian metropolitan area.
Before accepting an offer, confirm:
- whether the plant arranges transport or you commute on your own,
- how overtime and night work are settled for your type of contract,
- whether the offer includes help with accommodation,
- what qualifications you need before the start date and which ones the plant trains on site,
- what level of Polish the position requires.
Current listings from the region are in job offers. Terms of a specific offer are confirmed before signing the contract.
Work statement or work permit
The basis is legal stay and a title to work. Citizens of several countries specified in the regulations can work on the basis of a work statement (oświadczenie o powierzeniu pracy), other foreigners usually need a work permit (zezwolenie na pracę). Confirm the current list of these countries at the labor office before filing an application.
| Feature | Work statement | Work permit |
|---|---|---|
| Where the employer files | District Labor Office in Katowice (Powiatowy Urząd Pracy) | Silesian Voivodeship Office (Śląski Urząd Wojewódzki) |
| Time | entry within 7 business days, up to 30 days with an inquiry procedure | 2 to 4 months |
| Maximum work period | 24 months | depends on the decision |
Since June 1, 2025, applications and attachments are filed exclusively electronically through praca.gov.pl. In case of a formal deficiency, the office calls for it to be corrected within 7 days of delivery of the notice.
To register a work statement, the employer attaches:
- a statement of no criminal record,
- the employer's identity document,
- a scan of the passport pages or another identity document of the foreigner.
The employer reports the start of work to the labor office within 7 days of the first day of work. If the foreigner did not start on the declared date, there are 14 days to report this. Work statement matters in Katowice are handled by the District Labor Office (Powiatowy Urząd Pracy). Matters to handle after arrival are gathered in the article on your first job in Poland.
Employment agency in Katowice versus direct employment
With temporary work, you sign the contract with the agency but perform the work at the plant. The agency prepares the legalization documents and keeps track of filing deadlines. At some offers, the worker has a coordinator speaking Ukrainian or Russian. Plants looking for people in the region will find cooperation terms in the offer for employers.
Frequently asked questions
Do you need to know Polish for warehouse work in Silesia?
It depends on the position and the plant. Confirm the required language level before signing the contract, since positions requiring qualifications tend to demand a higher level than simple warehouse work.
How long is the wait for a work permit in the Silesian voivodeship?
The office usually processes the application in 2 to 4 months. Formal deficiencies extend the case, since there are 7 days to correct them from the notice.
Does the employment agency help with accommodation?
At some offers, yes, but not at every one. Ask about it for the specific offer and request confirmation of the terms before signing the contract.
This text describes the general rules. What you are entitled to depends on your type of contract: an employment contract (umowa o pracę) or a contract of mandate (umowa zlecenie). Your own contract and payslip are what count.
